Định nghĩa số CAS
Số đăng ký CAS là sự xác định bằng chuỗi số định danh duy nhất cho các nguyên tố hóa học. Và cả cho các hợp chất hóa học, các polyme, các chuỗi sinh học, các hỗn hợp và các hợp kim. Chúng còn được nói đến như là các số CAS hay các CAS RN.
Dịch vụ tóm tắt hóa chất (CAS – viết tắt của Chemical Abstracts Service trong tiếng Anh). Một bộ phận của Hiệp hội hóa chất Hoa Kỳ, gắn các chuỗi số định danh này cho mọi hóa chất đã được miêu tả trong các loại sách.
Mục đích của nó là làm cho việc tìm kiếm trong các cơ sở dữ liệu thuận tiện hơn. Do các hóa chất thông thường có rất nhiều tên gọi khác nhau. Gần như mọi cơ sở dữ liệu về hóa chất ngày nay đều cho phép tìm kiếm theo số CAS.
Cơ sở dữ liệu CAS hiện có hơn 55 triệu hợp chất hóa học hữu cơ và vô cơ khác nhau. Mỗi mục nhập của CAS được xác định bằng Mã số CAS hoặc CAS RN.
